In most instances, the first day of coverage begins 10 days from the date Healthy Families determines that a child qualifies for the program. If your child’s no-cost Medi-Cal coverage is ending, Healthy Families coverage begins after the Medi-Cal coverage ends. (Further information on converting from Medi-Cal follows in a later question.) Healthy Families does not offer retroactive coverage.

Healthy Families is a State-sponsored program that contracts with selected insurance companies throughout California. Each county has different companies from which enrollees choose and each company contracts directly with healthcare providers. These are the doctors, dentists, eye doctors and specialists who will provide the care to your children. Once you have chosen the insurance company in your area, you will be able to choose your child’s providers. This information is currently unavailable online. Please check back at a later convenience for updates. We appreciate your patience! Each insurance company is responsible for the quality of care that their contracted doctors provide. The State has quality mandates that must be met; surveys and audits are conducted to ensure your child will receive excellent health care through the Healthy Families Program. If you have any concerns about a doctor and the care provided to your child, you may file a grievance with the insurance company and if you are not satisfied with the outcome, there is a State agency that can help. The Healthy Families Handbook includes the information on how to proceed in such an event.
